Our Story

The idea for Connolly’s Kitchen began when Dublin native Paul and his American wife Wendy were returning from a night in the pub and he lamented, “I want to go to a chipper, a real chipper with proper chips, not fries.”

All she could do was look at him nonplussed and shrug. “I’m sorry, dear. I guess if that’s what you want, you’ll have to start it yourself.”

She had been the lucky recipient of his cooking since he arrived and knew that his homemade beef stew was too good to be kept at home, and that Irish sausages were worth foreswearing her vegetarian ways.

Stew without soda bread is waste of good broth, and hand-made scones are a world apart from the production versions found elsewhere, and a menu was soon forming.

We use Real ingredients for our fresh and handmade dishes, according to Irish tradition.

Made the Irish way

Once a part of religious observance on Fridays, a trip to “The Chipper” remains as a delightful part of Irish custom. It might mean a night off from the kitchen, a snack on the way home from the pub, or a “can’t miss” part of a tour. Wrapped in paper and stuffed in a brown bag, filling the car with a wonderful aroma on a cold rainy drive, you better believe that not all the chips make it home.

Irish fish and chips are different than what you might expect. Fish is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Chips are definitely NOT fries, they’re light brown on the outside and fluffy on the inside, never hard or greasy.

You’ll find no corned beef on our menu, as the world is smaller now, and we can offer the real Irish rasher (bacon) my ancestors tried to substitute with corned beef when they settled in to the big city.

Now, we’ll try not to wince if you put tartar sauce on your fish, or catsup on your chips, or (gasp) sugar instead of milk in your tea, but try a bite or two our way, a sprinkling of tangy-sweet malt vinegar and salt.
